TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Bali has been voted the world's best culture destination as part of the Tripadvisor’s Travelers Choice Awards 2025. Nicknamed the Island of the Gods, Bali has a plethora of awe-inspiring attractions, ranging from beaches and mountains to well-preserved art and culture.
The ranking is based on travelers’ reviews collected by the online travel website in a span of 12 months from October 1, 2023, to September 30, 2024.
Ubud—as the center of art in Bali—is one of the integral parts of the island’s cultural tourism. This is where visitors come to witness traditional dance and theater performances, as well as learn about cultural diversity.
Some of the suggested activities to do in Ubud include watching the kecak dance performed at temples, barong and waksirsa dances, Balinese shadow puppet shows, and traditional Legong dances.
Villages that Preserve Culture
Ubud is one place to bask in Balinese culture, but it’s not the only one. Some villages across the island also maintain cultural values and ancestral customs.
Panglipuran Village, for one, is a village located in Kubu, Bangli District, which was built with the concept of Tri Mandala. Nista Mandala is the outermost area, Madya Mandala—the middle area, and Utama Mandala—the innermost place.
Some other villages are the Trunyan Village and Tenganan Village, where locals diligently follow the teachings of their ancestors in their daily lives.
Island of a Thousand Temples
Bali houses numerous temples, where many attract daily visitors. Some of the most well-known temples in Bali include Tanah Lot Temple, where the two structures are separated by the ocean, and the Besakih Temple, the largest and most sacred temple for Hindus in Bali.
For visitors seeking tranquil sunset views while enjoying a kecak dance performance, Pura Luhur Uluwatu is the place to be. The temple is perched on a cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean.
Travelers, domestic and foreign alike, are also welcome to visit the Goa Lawah ancient temple, with a history dating back to 1007 AD. The Ulun Danu Temple on the shores of Lake Beratan is where the locals go to perform ritual activities, such as the traditional Melasti ceremony.
Top 10 Cultural Destinations in 2025
Of the 25 cultural destinations ranked by Tripadvisor, 10 places made it to the top of the culture destination list. Hanoi in Vietnam follows right after Bali. London rests comfortably in third place, followed by Marrakesh, Rome, and Cusco. The rest are Kathmandu, New Delhi, Crete, and Siem Reap in Cambodia.
