TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has denied social media claims that Jakarta is on "Alert One" status following the detection of a massive Squall Line phenomenon heading towards Java. The agency clarified that it has not issued any such early warnings.
"The information regarding a Squall Line detection circulating on social media is not an official release from BMKG," said Andri Ramdhani, Director of Public Meteorology at BMKG, when contacted today, Wednesday, December 31, 2025.
The term 'squall line' refers to long, continuous stretches of rain clouds moving in a line. Massive cumulonimbus cloud lines can trigger extreme weather, which led to the viral social media question: "New Year's Eve Threatened by Extreme Storm?"
While Andri dismissed the rumor, he still urged the public to remain cautious. He explained that atmospheric conditions in the Jabodetabek area are currently influenced by the Asian Monsoon, which carries humid air. This is being reinforced by a cold surge from Asia and Rossby equatorial waves traversing Java.
Additionally, there is an indirect influence from tropical cyclone seed 90S in the Indian Ocean, southwest of Lampung. Andri noted that this has led to convergence zones and wind deceleration (convergence) stretching from southern Sumatra to western Java, including Greater Jakarta or Jabodetabek.
"These atmospheric conditions increase the potential for rainfall in Jabodetabek. People are advised to stay vigilant against weather changes and potential hydrometeorological disasters as we approach the 2026 New Year," he added.
Andri urged the public to rely on official weather information via the InfoBMKG application, the website www.bmkg.go.id, or official BMKG social media accounts. He also advised people to stay aware of local weather risks. "Activity plans should be adjusted for potential heavy rain, strong winds, and high waves during New Year celebrations."
