TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecasts heavy rainfall across several regions in Indonesia until March 2026. Peak rainy season in January is expected to hit all of Java Island, said BMKG head Teuku Faisal Fathani.
Meanwhile, sourthern Sumatra is forecast to have its peak rainy season in early 2026. "In Bali, Nusa Tenggara, and southern Papua, as well as parts of South Sulawesi, the rainy season will peak in January," during a briefing observed on YouTube on Tuesday, December 30, 2025.
Heavy rainfall is also expected in February next year in Central Java and South Sulawesi, while certain parts of Sumatra will be seeing the start of the dry season. "On the east coast of Aceh, North Sumatra, Riau, and parts of Jambi," he said.
Teuku mentioned that regions expecting the dry season in February are located close to the equator. This indicates that these areas have two rainy seasons and two dry seasons.
BMKG, according to Teuku, advises these regions to remain cautious, especially in regards with wildfires in central and northern Sumatra. Meanwhile, in March 2026, Teuku explained that high to very high rainfall is predicted to affect areas in Central Java.
Teuku said the weather agency has already compared the monthly rainfall characteristics between the last 30 years and the current situation. In general, he said, the rainfall in Indonesia remains normal. "Except in January, some parts of Java, and Nusa Tenggara are slightly above normal in terms of rainfall characteristics," Teuku said.
He explained that Indonesia is currently hit by weak La Niña conditions, which are likely to persist into the next year. "This is the condition of the sea surface temperature anomalies in Indonesian waters that lead to the formation of high clouds and consequently, fairly high rainfall in Indonesia," said Teuku.
