TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued another early warning about high waves in several domestic waters from January 22 to 25, 2025. BMKG forecaster Soleh Ismail said the wind pattern in northern Indonesia is moving east at 6-30 knots. At a similar rate, winds in the southern region are blowing from southwest to northwest.

"The highest wind speeds were observed in the Java Sea, the Indian Ocean west of Lampung to southern East Java, and the Makassar Strait," Soleh said via written message on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.

According to Soleh, the strong winds triggered an increase in sea waves of up to 2.5-4 meters with an opportunity in the Indian Ocean south of Banten and West Java. There is also the potential for high waves up to a maximum of 2.5 meters in the northern Malacca Strait, the West Indian Ocean from Aceh to Lampung, the Karimata Strait, and the eastern Java Sea. There is also a similar potential in the ocean south of Central Java to East Nusa Tenggara, Sawu Sea, eastern Sulawesi Sea, Maluku Sea, eastern Banda Sea, North Pacific Ocean from Maluku to Papua, then the western and central Arafuru Sea.

"The potential for high waves in some of these areas can pose a risk to shipping safety," he said.

Soleh asked fishermen to be aware of winds of more than 15 knots and waves that exceed 1.25 meters in height. Barges should also know wind speeds of more than 16 knots and wave heights above 1.5 meters. "The potential for high waves in some of these areas can pose a risk to shipping safety," reads the warning.

There is also an appeal for ferry captains to be aware of wind speeds above 21 knots and wave heights above 2.5 meters. Captains of large fleets, such as cargo and cruise ships, should pay attention to winds above 27 knots and wave heights above 4 meters.

"We ask the people who live and do activities on the coast to remain always vigilant," said Soleh.
