BMKG: Tropical Cyclone 93S Intensifies While Drifting Away from Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has predicted that Tropical Cyclone 93S is moving away from Indonesian waters toward the west, with its intensity expected to increase by Wednesday to winds of 60 knots (110 kilometers per hour).

BMKG weather forecaster Afif Shalahuddin said in a written statement on Monday, December 22, 2025, that the cyclone is already generating indirect impacts, including strong winds in Lampung and Banten.

Moderate waves of 1.25 to 2.50 meters are expected in waters west of the Mentawai Islands, from Bengkulu to Lampung, the southern Sunda Strait, southern Banten to West Nusa Tenggara, and the southern Bali Strait.

The agency predicts 93S will reach Category 1 intensity on Monday morning and Category 2 by Monday evening. Over the next 72 hours, the cyclone’s intensity is expected to gradually decline, with wind speeds decreasing to 55 knots (100 kilometers per hour).

Afif noted that the cyclone is supported by active low-frequency waves and the dynamics of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) in both northern and southern regions. Additional factors include sufficiently moist air and weak vertical wind shear, which allow the cyclone to maintain strength.

“After experiencing fluctuations, including a drop in convective activity over the past 12 hours, Tropical Cyclone 93S is expected to intensify gradually again,” Afif said. “Its intensity is predicted to slowly increase throughout Monday, posing risks of strong winds and moderate waves in affected coastal areas.”
