TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) announced that the weather modification conducted on December 7-8, 2024, was able to reduce rainfall in Jakarta by up to 67 percent. BMKG head Dwikorita Karnawati said the operation was aimed at reducing the potential for hydrometeorological disasters such as flooding, which often hit Jakarta due to high rainfall intensity.
"As a result, we successfully reduced rainfall in several areas, with reduction intensities ranging from 13 percent to 67 percent on December 7 and 8, based on data from the Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP)," Dwikorita said in her written statement on Tuesday, December 10, 2024.
She explained that this modification was done by cloud seeding for two consecutive days. A total of five flights were conducted using four tons of seeding material to control rain distribution in the Jakarta area.
The weather modification was carried out after BMKG issued an early warning of extreme weather that would occur on December 6-8 and could continue until December 9, 2024. The impact caused heavy rain, which could be accompanied by lightning and strong winds.
Extreme weather caused by several atmospheric phenomena occurring simultaneously is expected to occur in several regions of Indonesia, particularly in West Java, the southern part of Banten, and Jakarta. This is due to the presence of a tropical cyclone seed 91S and the activity of the Madden-Julian Oscillation wave.
Deputy of Weather Modification at BMKG, Tri Handoko Seto, explained that referring to satellite data on December 7, 2024, this operation had reduced rainfall on the eastern side of Jakarta. However, rainfall increased on the central and western sides of Jakarta.
On December 8, almost the entire Jakarta area experienced reduced rainfall. "Through this weather modification technology, we can direct the rain so that it does not accumulate in one place. For example, on December 8, reduced rainfall occurred in almost the entire Jakarta area, significantly reducing the risk of flooding," Seto said.
According to BMKG, the weather modification carried out in early December is still effective in controlling rainfall intensity in vulnerable areas, especially in densely populated areas such as Jakarta. However, as the peak of the rainy season approaches, which is predicted to occur simultaneously with several dynamic atmospheric phenomena, the ability of weather modification is still relatively limited.
