TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Base Transceiver Station modules (BTS modules) owned by Telkomsel have been stolen since 2020. Metro Menteng Police Station mentioned that Telkomsel has suffered losses up to trillions of rupiah. Metro Menteng Police Chief, Police Commissioner Bayu Marfiando, revealed that the theft of BTS modules has been happening since the Covid-19 pandemic.
"Indeed, there have been many (thefts of BTS modules) since Covid. Left unchecked, it is becoming more rampant," said Bayu to Tempo, on Monday, October 14, 2024. However, Metro Menteng Police Station and Central Jakarta Metro Police only uncovered the case of the stolen BTS modules on September 1, 2024.
The police arrested the main perpetrator, Mujrimi (30), who played a role as a field culprit. After nabbing Mujrimi, the police conducted an investigation and ultimately also arrested several other suspects. They are Akhbar Laysa alias Basuki (29), Triyono (34), Rinto Charles Hutagalung (25), and Andi Bonie (49). They were caught in various locations, including Serpong and Kebon Sirih.
Menteng Police Chief revealed that the motive of the suspects stealing BTS modules was due to economic reasons. Bayu said that the theft of BTS modules is not only in Jakarta. But also occurs in various regions such as the eastern and western parts of Indonesia.
"That's why our evidence, some of it is from (outside Jakarta) as well. There are from Riau, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, almost all cases are similar," said Bayu.
The thieves worked quite neatly and organized. The stolen BTS modules were each priced at around Rp90 million. However, the perpetrators sold them at a lower price, around Rp7 million to Rp8 million per unit to foreign nationals.
This crime is suspected to have an international network with one of the fugitive perpetrators being Sun Jason, who is a Chinese national. Menteng Police Chief suspects Sun Jason is the mastermind behind the shipment of the BTS modules to Hong Kong.
