TEMPO.COJakarta - Heavy rains continue to cause widespread floods and landslides across Southeast Asia and have claimed several lives, while authorities are moving to provide assistance as reported by Al Jazeera.

One person has been confirmed dead in Vietnam on Monday, bringing the death toll in the country to 91 within just a week. Five other casualties were reported in Thailand.

The Vietnam Meteorological Agency has warned that heavy rains that have been lashing the country since October could return this weekend, posing additional risks in some areas. Nearly half of Vietnam's over 100 million population live in flood-prone areas.

The highest death toll recorded in Vietnam occurred in the mountainous province of Dak Lak, where at least 63 people drowned.

Loss of lives has also been reported in the provinces of Khanh Hoa, Lam Dong, Gia Lai, Danang, Hue, and Quang Tri as the southern-central region of Vietnam has been hit by severe floods and landslides.

This Southeast Asian country has suffered losses of at least US$500 million due to continuous heavy rains, with entire city blocks submerged and agricultural land inundated.

The government has mobilized tens of thousands of personnel to deliver food, medicine, and other essential supplies, with helicopters being used to provide assistance in flood-stricken areas and highlands.

The monsoon rains cause annual flooding in Southeast Asia, but this year the rainfall has been exceptionally high.

Vietnam is usually prone to flash floods from June to September, but scientists say human-induced climate change is leading to more frequent extreme weather and damage.

In Thailand, flash floods have been reported in the southern region of the country, impacting nearly two million people, officials said.

Local authorities reported that Hat Yai, the main economic center in Songkhla province, was hit by 335 millimeters of rainfall on Friday, the highest in 24 hours in 300 years as reported by CNA.

The rainfall in the city was almost double that amount from Wednesday to Friday. Further rain is expected to hit Thailand in the coming days.

This country has been hit by heavy rains causing floods over the past year with at least 25 deaths in December.

In Malaysia, local authorities said on Monday that over 12,500 people have been evacuated.

The state of Kelantan in the northeast, bordering Thailand, is the hardest-hit area with over 8,000 people affected. There are no reports of deaths.

Floods and landslides occurred after a typhoon hit the region in September and October.

The International Organization for Migration estimates that the storm caused damages worth US$1.2 billion in Vietnam with over half a million houses damaged and hundreds of thousands of people evacuated.
