TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - The public and tourists visiting Yogyakarta are advised to be aware of extreme weather conditions. Heavy rain and strong winds have been hitting Yogyakarta since the beginning of the year. Due to the extreme weather, on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, one person reportedly died after being hit by a fallen tree at Jalan Cendana, Umbulharjo, Yogyakarta.
The head of the Yogyakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Nurhidayat, said the incident occurred at around 06:10 p.m. local time. "The victim is a 42-year-old woman who was hit by a fallen tree during heavy rain accompanied by wind," Nurhidayat said on Tuesday evening.
At the time of the incident, the victim, the owner of a small shop known as warung, was known to be cleaning his stall. Suddenly, a pine tree with a height of about 9 meters and a diameter of 75 centimeters fell and hit him.
Nurhidayat revealed that it had been raining throughout the city from around 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. Several places in the city of Yogyakarta were also affected. For example, at Jalan Sultan Agung, in front of Keraton Pura Pakualaman area, Yogyakarta City, the traffic flow was temporarily blocked due to a 6-meter long and 30-centimeter diameter old banyan tree branch breaking onto the road at 03:10 p.m.
The broken banyan branch hit and broke the public street lighting cable. Fortunately, there were no injuries or fatalities during the incident.
Extreme weather until February
Reni Kraningtyas, head of the Yogyakarta Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency's climatology station, warned the public and tourists in Yogyakarta to be aware of the potential for extreme weather predicted to hit the city and its surrounding areas until February.
Yogyakarta BMKG said that based on observations of physical symptoms and the latest atmospheric ocean dynamics data, the wind in the southern equatorial part of Indonesia is blowing from the west, indicating an active Asian monsoon.
"Rainfall in the Yogyakarta region for the next 30 days from the end of January to mid-February 2025 is predicted to be medium-high, averaging between 50-300 millimeters, with varying rainfall characteristics," he said.
Reni said that in the next three months or until April, rainfall in the Yogyakarta region is predicted to be even higher. Rainfall in February 2025 is forecasted to be between 201-500 mm (medium-high criteria), with rainfall characteristics ranging from normal to above normal. Meanwhile, rainfall in March 2025 is also predicted to range from 201-500 mm (medium-high criteria) with rainfall characteristics varying from below normal to above normal. Precipitation will decrease slightly in April 2025, with a forecast of 101-300 mm (medium criteria).
Beware of hydrometeorological disasters
BMKG urges local government, related institutions, and the community to brace for the potential for extreme weather such as heavy rains and strong winds.
"During the peak of the rainy season, please be aware of hydrometeorological disasters such as floods, landslides, and strong winds that have the potential to occur, especially in disaster-prone areas in the Yogyakarta region," he said.
