TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A series of explosions occurred around the area of a high school mosque in North Jakarta. The incident at Jakarta State High School (SMAN) 72 took place on Friday, November 7, 2025, at 12:30 p.m. local time. Here are some facts about the explosion:

About 50 People Injured, 2 Undergoing Surgery

Indonesian National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo said two people are undergoing surgery due to the explosion at SMAN 72, Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta. Listyo explained that around 50 people were injured in the explosions. 

Suspected Perpetrator of the Explosion Still a Student

Listyo Sigit confirmed that the attacker is a 17-year-old student, but did not disclose whether it's SMAN 72. He stated that the police are currently investigating the perpetrator's identity, background, and place of residence. 

The police are looking into the attacker's motives. 

Suspected Attacker Undergoes Surgery

The police chief said the alleged attacker is undergoing surgery. "For now, one of those undergoing surgery is the alleged attacker," Listyo said at Istana Merdeka.

Alleged Attacker Asked About Language Month Event

A student from SMAN 72 Jakarta, Kinan (not real name), recounted the alleged perpetrator of the explosion asking about the language month event at the school.

Kinan, who claimed to have known the alleged attacker since childhood, said they had interacted twice. "I was asked, once after leaving the school toilet, 'when is the peak event for bulbas (language month)?'" Kinan said when met at the RS Islam Cempaka Putih, Central Jakarta, Friday, November 7, 2025.

A few days after, Kinan was once again asked about the grand event for language month at the school. "I was asked, since I was going to be one of the MCs at the event," the student said, adding that the alleged attacker could have been planning an attack during the language month event. 

"Since the peak event for language month is on November 10," Kinan added. 

Prabowo's Response to the Explosion at SMAN 72 Jakarta

President Prabowo Subianto responded to the explosion at SMAN 72 Jakarta, Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, which injured 54 people. State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi said the head of state requested that authorities make victim handling their top priority.

Parents of Victims Speak of Their Children's Trauma

Parent of a student who witnessed the explosion at SMA Negeri 72 Jakarta, Indri Widyaningrum, said her kid, Rafi (not his real name), experiences trauma due to the incident. Rafi, a 10th-grade student, witnessed the moment of the explosion in the school's mosque.

Weapon Found at the Explosion Site

Lodewijk Freidrich confirmed the presence of a toy rifle at the location, as widely circulated on social media. Meanwhile, Listyo said his personnel will investigate whether inscriptions on the fake rifle indicated the attacker's motive.
