TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Heavy rains caused flooding in three villages in Bone Bolango Regency in Gorontalo, Sulawesi on Wednesday afternoon, January 8, 2025. The Bone Bolango Regency Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported that three villages in two sub-districts were affected, namely Bonda Raya and Libungo villages in South Suwawa district and Bilungala village in Bone Pantai district.

The head of the Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Abdul Muhari, said the disaster affected 129 families or 365 people. "Residents are still cleaning up the mud and materials carried by the water current," he said in a written statement on Thursday, January 9, 2025.

According to Muhari, 306 flood victims were in Bonda Raya village, 38 in Libungo village, and 21 others in Bilungala village. Amid the risk of extreme weather, the BNPB appealed to the public to be aware of the risk of hydrometeorological disasters.

"Prepare a disaster emergency bag or equipment such as important documents, food, and drinking water to survive for at least three days," Muhari said.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that rainfall in several regions of Indonesia will increase over the next few days. In one of the BMKG's analyses, tropical cyclone 97S was observed to be affecting weather south of Lampung. Moderate to heavy rain intensity, even accompanied by strong winds, has the potential to fall on various areas, including Bengkulu, South Sumatra, Lampung, Banten, Jakarta, West Java, and Central Java.

BMKG Public Meteorology Director Andri Ramdhani said rainfall is also influenced by other factors, such as monsoons and cold fronts from Asia. "Especially in the western part of Indonesia," he said.

Rainfall is also affected by the activity of equatorial Rossby and Kelvin waves, which are forecast to remain active next week, "especially in Sumatra, Java, parts of Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku and Papua."
