TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Secretary General of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen), Suharti, has confirmed that 628 students in Sukabumi Regency remain out of school following the recent floods and landslides. Eight educational facilities sustained damage due to the disaster, which severely impacted most parts of Sukabumi last Tuesday and Wednesday.
“Since December 3, 2024, the learning process at the affected schools has been suspended, and if feasible, remote learning options are being explored,” Suharti said in a written statement released on Tuesday, December 10, 2024.
Suharti explained that the damage impacted eight schools, ranging from early childhood education to junior high school (SMP). “We are actively coordinating with various stakeholders to gather data on students, schools, and teachers in the disaster-affected villages,” she added.
Suharti further detailed that in Sukabumi Regency, four elementary schools, two early childhood education centers, one junior high school, and one community learning center suffered damage.
In addition to the 628 affected students, 235 teachers were also impacted by the disaster. At the Secondary and Special Education levels, four high schools and one vocational school were damaged, affecting 214 students.
Based on preliminary data, Suharti reported that the floods, landslides, soil movement, and strong winds that ravaged Sukabumi on December 4-5 temporarily disrupted operations at 1,275 educational units. A similar impact was observed in Cianjur Regency, where 625 educational units were affected.
The Sukabumi Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported that flash floods, landslides, soil movement, and extreme weather conditions impacted 33 locations across Sukabumi Regency over two days, from Tuesday to Wednesday, December 3-4.
According to the latest BPBD data, these flash floods affected hundreds of people, resulting in ten fatalities and two individuals still missing. Furthermore, BPBD Sukabumi detailed that landslides occurred at 13 locations, floods at nine locations, strong winds at seven locations, and soil movement at four locations, impacting 22 districts.
Furthermore, a total of 103 households of 243 individuals were affected by this disaster. 46 households of 93 individuals sought refuge in evacuation centers. BPBD Sukabumi also reported 36 houses with minor damage, three with moderate damage, and one with severe damage due to the disaster.
