TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono met with his Indian counterpart S. Jaishankar on the sidelines of the BRICS Plus Summit in Kazan, Russia, on October 23, 2024. The meeting discussed various bilateral, regional, and global collaborations.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained in its statement that Indonesia and India celebrate the 75th year of diplomatic relations. Sugiono reiterated Indonesia's commitment to strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership between Indonesia and India. He also encouraged the collaboration of the two countries in various multilateral forums.

India is an essential partner for Indonesia's food resilience, and Indonesia welcomed India's decision to lift the ban on non-basmati white rice exports. This decision has opened up opportunities to increase bilateral trade for rice commodities that will support Indonesia's food resilience.

In addition to food issues, the two foreign ministers also exchanged views and explored various bilateral cooperations, including nutritious lunch programs, housing, pharmaceuticals, creative industries, defense, and education.

On this occasion, Sugiono also invited Jaishankar to attend the 8th Indonesia-India Joint Commission Meeting to be held in Jakarta. Several priority collaborations to be discussed at the meeting include the economic sector, defense industries, education, as well as research and development.

India and Indonesia have profound historical and cultural relations. Traders from Gujarat have long-established relationships with places such as Aceh and Surabaya. Indian cultural elements are found in various Sanskrit words in the Indonesian language. Well-known epics such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata are still recognized in Indonesia.

India and Indonesia established diplomatic relations in 1949. A year later, Indonesian President Soekarno was appointed as the chief guest on the first Republic Day of India in 1950. Similarly, India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, visited Bandung to attend the Asia-Africa Conference in 1955.

Both countries then upgraded their relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018 during the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Indonesia. India and Indonesia also have a Shared Vision of India-Indonesia Maritime Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.
