TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government has officially signed a joint ministerial decree declaring August 18, 2025, as a collective leave day.
The decree was signed by Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar, Minister of Manpower Yassierli, and Minister of State Apparatus Empowerment and Bureaucratic Reform Rini Widyantini.
This joint decision was finalized on August 7, 2025, with each ministry issuing a document numbered 933/2025, 1/2025, and 3/2025, respectively.
According to documents reviewed by Tempo, this new decision modifies the previous joint decree from the same ministers, which carried the numbers 1017/2024, 2/2024, and 2/2024 regarding national holidays and collective leave for 2025.
The decree’s rationale, as stated in the document, highlights the importance of strengthening national unity, integrity, and patriotism in honor of the 80th Anniversary of Indonesian Independence. It also mentions the government’s appreciation for the people through the celebration of Independence Day.
Following this decree, August 18, 2025, is now officially included among the collective leave days for 2025. With this addition, the total number of collective leave days reaches 11.
These include January 28 for Chinese New Year 2576 Kongzili; March 28 for the Nyepi Holy Day (Saka New Year 1947); April 2, 3, 4, and 7 for Eid al-Fitr 1446 Hijriah; May 13 for Vesak Day 2569 BE; May 30 for the Ascension of Jesus Christ; June 9 for Eid al-Adha 1446 Hijriah; August 18 for Independence Day; and December 26 for Christmas.
Earlier, the government had also declared August 18 a national holiday to commemorate the 80th Indonesia's independence Day. Deputy Minister of State Secretary Juri Ardiantoro said this holiday is a gesture of appreciation for the public.
He explained that designating August 18 as a day off would give citizens the opportunity to organize competitions and celebrations related to the anniversary.
“The government will turn August 18, 2025, the day after the proclamation ceremony, into a celebration for the people, with carnivals and independence-themed events. Monday, August 18, will be a public holiday,” Juri said during a press briefing at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Friday, August 1, 2025.
