TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Renowned Swedish activist Greta Thunberg has been released from custody after being detained on Tuesday morning at a demonstration in London, UK, in support of pro-Palestinian prisoners on a hunger strike.
Thunberg was released on bail after being detained for holding a sign that said "I support Palestine Action prisoners. I oppose genocide," said the Prisoners for Palestine group on X, as reported by Anadolu.
The group noted that two demonstrators who had shut down the Aspen Insurance office in solidarity with the hunger-striking prisoners are still being held at the Bishopsgate police station.
Thunberg, 22, was arrested by police outside the Aspen office, which, according to the group, provides services to the Israeli weapons company, Elbit Systems.
She was arrested under the UK Terrorism Act. "She has been arrested for displaying an item (in this case a placard) in support of a proscribed organisation (in this case Palestine Action) contrary to Section 13 of the Terrorism Act 2000," wrote the London City Police on the US social media platform, X.
Some activists also sprayed red paint on the front of the building before being detained.
The protest comes amid mounting criticism of the government over the conditions of six prisoners associated with the proscribed group Palestine Action, who have been on hunger strike since November.
Palestine Action was proscribed in July under the Terrorism Act after its members sprayed paint on two Royal Air Force planes, causing damage worth 7 million according to the police. Hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists have been arrested across the UK since then.
International Condemnation
Thunberg's arrest has drawn international backlash, including from Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territory, who criticized the UK government and accused it of being part of efforts to cover up Israeli genocide.
"To the UK government: the more people you arrest to shamefully cover up Israel's genocide the more decent people will stand up against you in the name of human rights," she wrote on X, accompanied by a video of Thunberg's arrest.
Albanese added, "In the end, we will all make sure that the leaders who are complicit with Israel genocide will face justice."
Green Party leader Zack Polanski also condemned the arrest, saying Thunberg was arrested "for holding a sign opposing genocide."
"When peaceful protest is a crime, democracy is in deep trouble,” Polanski said, adding that this is "happening under a Labour government."
Richard Burgon, a Labour lawmaker, called the arrest "totally ridiculous," and added that this is another example of why he voted against the proscription of Palestine Action in Parliament.
Zarah Sultana of the Your Party said Thunberg was arrested "for opposing genocide" while Prime Minister Keir Starmer - whom she called "complicit in the genocide of the Palestinian people" - roams free.
"He should be arrested and sent to The Hague," Sultana said.
