TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Special Presidential Envoy for Climate and Energy, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, said the government plans to build a 103-gigawatt power grid over the next 15 years. The construction is estimated to require the cooperation of hundreds of companies with an investment of more than US$15 billion per year.
Hashim said he conveyed the plan when he attended the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2024 or COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan last month. He attended the event with the Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurrofiq and Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni.
"At COP29, I conveyed that the Indonesian government plans to build a 103 gigawatt power grid in the next 15 years," Hashim said at the Nusantara TV Awards 2024 CEO Awards event in South Jakarta on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.
Based on his records, Indonesia has a total power grid with a capacity of about 80 to 90 gigawatts, which was built after Indonesia's independence era.
The deputy chairman of the Gerindra Party's board of trustees also added that of the total 103 gigawatts of power grid, 75 percent will come from new and renewable energy sources. "The remaining 5.3 gigawatts will consist of nuclear energy, nuclear power plants," he said.
Meanwhile, the rest will come from gas and fossil fuels - which he said have a "minimal" carbon footprint.
Hashim said that this plan is a challenge for CEOs. He added that this program will require foreign investors.
"Because we need tens to hundreds of CEOs and companies to work on this, as investors, as operators, as suppliers, as vendors and others. One hundred and three gigawatts is an investment of about $235 billion. We need an investment of $15 billion a year and more to realize a program like this," he said.
According to Hasyim, this program will contribute significantly to President Prabowo Subianto's goal of achieving 8 percent economic growth. Hashim had previously expressed confidence that Indonesia could exceed this target.
"Eight percent is a minimum target for Mr. Prabowo. At least it's a minimum of 8 percent. Our target is above 8 percent. I personally see that we have the possibility to reach 9 to 9.5 percent," he said.
