TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government has issued a joint ministerial decree (SKB 3 Menteri) designating August 18, 2025, as a collective leave day.
The decree was signed by Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar, Minister of Manpower Yassierli, and Minister of State Apparatus Empowerment and Bureaucratic Reform Rini Widyantini.
Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture, Imam Machdi, explained that the decision was made to encourage public participation in celebrating Independence Day.
The public is expected to take part in various activities, such as flag ceremonies, traditional games, public festivals, and cultural or educational events. The government encourages people to use the day productively and responsibly.
"This step aims to give the public more space to commemorate independence with dignity, joy, and national pride," Imam said in a written statement on Thursday, August 7, 2025.
He added that the addition of this collective leave day is also expected to have a positive impact through increased public mobility, particularly in the tourism sector and local economy.
Before the decree was issued, the government had already announced that August 18, 2025, would be a national holiday to mark the 80th anniversary of Indonesian independence. Deputy Minister of State Secretariat Juri Ardiantoro said the day off is a gesture of appreciation for the public.
He explained that the day after the anniversary was chosen to allow people more time and freedom to organize events and celebrate.
"The government is turning August 18, 2025, into a public celebration, including an independence carnival, and officially declaring it a day off," Juri said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Friday, August 1, 2025.
