TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Apple’s AirPods are among the most popular wireless earbuds globally, celebrated for their perfect balance of durability, reliability, and high-quality sound. Starting at US$129 for the AirPods 4, the currently available models include the AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Max.
These earbuds are widely available in both physical and online stores. However, this widespread availability and popularity have raised concerns about copycat versions flooding the market. Considering the high price, you surely want to be certain the AirPods you’re buying are authentic, right?
If that’s the case, you’ve come to this article at the right time. Read on to discover three ways to tell if AirPods are fake, citing TechRadar.
3 Easy Ways to Tell if AirPods are Fake:
1. Look for the serial number.
The first and easiest way to tell if AirPods are fake or not is by checking the serial number. On genuine AirPods, the serial number can be found at the bottom of the charging case lid and on the right earbud. Keep in mind that the serial numbers on the case and the earbud will be different, as Apple issues them this way.
While some fake AirPods also display a serial number, only authentic ones can be verified for warranty status at check.coverage.apple.com.
2. Try to pair it with an iOS device.
The pop-up feature that appears when pairing AirPods is made possible by the W1 chip, which is found only in authentic AirPods. To properly follow this tip, make sure your AirPods have sufficient battery and are placed near your iOS device with Bluetooth enabled.
Whether you're pairing your AirPods for the first time or not, the pop-up icon will still appear. The difference lies in the display of the icon. If it's the first time pairing, you will need to press and hold the connection button on your AirPods case. If it's not the first time, the pop-up will simply show the identity of the AirPods.
3. Analyze the AirPods look
As we all know, Apple is renowned for its sleek, clean, and minimalist designs across all its products. AirPods are no exception to this standard.
The wireless earbuds are meticulously designed, making it difficult for counterfeit versions to replicate their details perfectly. This attention to detail can help you determine whether your AirPods are authentic.
First, you can start by examining the box, particularly the written information. Look for typos, misspellings, or inconsistencies in the text. Additionally, check how the lid closes—if it doesn’t close tightly or feels off, it’s likely a counterfeit product.
Second, you need to look at the charging case. It’s a must-know that AirPods come with a Lightning charging port, not a USB-C one. Also, the lid of the charging case should close automatically due to its magnetic design.
Last, closely examine the earbuds themselves. Use an official, high-resolution image of the AirPods as a reference. Compare the details, such as the microphone placement and vents, to spot any differences. Even small discrepancies could indicate that your AirPods are fake.
