TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States (US) government is considering restricting visitors from 43 countries, including Russia, as reported by Reuters on Saturday.

The US is reportedly preparing a new travel ban that includes more countries than those signed by President Donald Trump during his first term in office.

A US official told Reuters that there might be changes to the list and that it has not been approved by the government.

The first group consists of 11 countries, namely Afghanistan, Bhutan, Cuba, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, and Yemen. They are designated for full visa suspensions.

The second group consists of 10 other countries - Belarus, Eritrea, Haiti, Laos, Myanmar, Pakistan, Russia, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, and Turkmenistan - will fall into the 'orange list'.

Visas for citizens of these 10 countries will only be issued for business visits, not immigrants or tourists. The duration of their visits to the US will also be limited, and applicants must attend an in-person interview when applying for a visa.

The third group will also be considered for partial visa suspensions... If, according to the memo, their government 'fails to address deficiencies within 60 days.'

The last list in the US plan is the 'yellow list,' which includes 22 countries, including Cambodia and many African countries.

However, the reasons for the US government imposing full or partial bans on travelers from these countries are still unclear.

It is also unclear whether visa holders or permanent residents ('green card' holders) from the US government will be affected.

These countries will be given 60 days to resolve a number of issues such as not sharing information with the US about visiting travelers, issuing passports deemed unsafe, or selling citizenship to individuals from countries banned by the US.

The plan was drafted several weeks ago and has been submitted to the White House for adjustments. The list of affected countries is being reviewed by the US Department of State and relevant agencies.

In his first term in 2017, Trump issued a ban on travelers from Muslim-majority and low-income countries, particularly in Africa.

The ban was later lifted by the Joe Biden administration in 2021.
