TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) researcher was doxxed by the Instagram account @volt_anonym, allegedly after responding to a report by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP). The report nominated Indonesian President Joko Widodo or Jokowi for the "Organized Crime and Corruption 2024" category.
ICW Coordinator Agus Sunaryanto confirmed that personal information about the researcher was exposed on social media. This included the researcher’s phone number, citizen ID (KTP) number, address, and last known location through a Google Maps link.
“The doxxing is an attempt to silence and suppress critical voices in the public sphere,” Agus said in a statement on January 3. He emphasized that this was not an isolated incident, noting that journalists, activists, and vocal citizens who criticize government policies have been targeted in similar ways before.
Agus suspects that those behind the doxxing may have access to sensitive personal data, potentially from sources entrusted with protecting citizens' information.
He also stated that criticism of Jokowi's inclusion in the OCCRP nomination should serve as a warning to strengthen efforts to combat corruption in the country. Under Jokowi’s two terms in office, Agus believes corruption eradication and democracy have both declined. “The doxxing of those who criticize Jokowi only reinforces that he deserves his nomination,” he added.
Agus called on law enforcement to investigate the account responsible for the intimidation. He expressed concern that others critical of the government could face similar attacks.
ICW reported that the doxxing occurred on January 3 when @volt_anonym uploaded the researcher's personal details, along with threatening statements that could endanger their safety. As of the publication of this article, the account has been removed from search results.
