TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries has added 17 scanners to detect radioactive contamination in shrimp products destined for the United States.
"In order to meet U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standard operating procedures, which will help increase the volume of shrimp shipments and streamline the production chain for the Indonesian shrimp industry," said Ishartini, Head of the Quality Control and Monitoring Agency for Marine and Fisheries Products, in a statement on Saturday, December 27, 2025.
Ishartini confirmed that the radioactive scanners meet the technical specifications required by the FDA, including high-precision models such as the Ortec and RIID Eye-SAM 940. The ministry hopes that providing these scanning facilities for Cesium-137 certification will significantly expedite the export process.
The equipment will be calibrated by the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) and stationed at Quality Control Agency offices across Java and Lampung. These locations were prioritized due to their high frequency and volume of exports to the U.S., ensuring maximum efficiency in certification services.
The stricter requirements follow a U.S. mandate for radioactivity-free certification for shrimp and cloves imported from Indonesia, specifically those sourced from Java and Lampung, which are currently on the "yellow list."
"The United States remains a viable market for Indonesian shrimp and cloves, as long as they meet these safety requirements," said Bara Krishna, Head of the Diplomacy and Communication Division of the Cesium-137 Task Force, on October 13, 2025.
The certification requirements were established under FDA Import Alert #99-52 following the discovery of Cesium-137 contamination in previous shipments. The FDA has officially recognized the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries as the authorized body to issue these radioactivity-free certificates.
