TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's National Nutrition Body (BGN) will operate 19,188 nutrition fulfillment service units (SPPG/kitchen) for the free nutritious meal program (MBG) on January 8, 2026. BGN stated that this number will automatically serve around 55.1 million beneficiaries in several regions in Indonesia.
MBG began operating on January 6, 2025. It ran 190 kitchens and reached around 570,000 beneficiaries. During this phase, Head of BGN Dadan Hindayana said the government is focusing on strengthening the system and improving operational readiness and governance of nutrition services. This will ensure the program runs in a measurable and accountable manner.
Dadan stated that what BGN has accomplished throughout 2025 is a crucial milestone in the development of a sustainable national nutrition fulfillment system. "In 2025, we used to build a strong foundation. From 190 SPPGs at the beginning of the year to 19,188 SPPGs at the end of the year, this demonstrates massive and measured work in preparing MBG services," Dadan said in a written statement on Thursday, January 1, 2026.
He emphasized that this readiness enables MBG to enter 2026 with an extensive coverage of beneficiaries from the first day, while also expanding the space for improving service quality. "Starting January 8, 2026, MBG will directly serve more than 55 million beneficiaries," he said.
In 2026, Dadan stated that MBG will not only focus on nutrition intervention, but also on improving the quality of kitchen services and strengthening nutrition education to enable the public to have a better understanding of choosing healthy and nutritious foods.
According to Dadan, this approach is part of the government's long-term strategy to build a healthy consumption pattern from an early age, in line with the target of increasing the number of beneficiaries to 82.9 million people.
Previously, BGN officially announced in early January 2026 that MBG services would be temporarily closed. The reason is to prepare for services that will be simultaneously reopened on January 8, 2026.
