TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Defense welcomed a military visit from China on Friday, January 10, 2025, aimed to boost relations between both countries. The head of the Defense Information Bureau, Brigadier General TNI Frega Wenas Inkiriwang, said the meeting embodies Indonesia’s free and active foreign policy.
“Wherein Indonesia is free to form relations with any country,” said Frega on Friday, January 10.
Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin discussed several agendas with the People's Liberation Army (PLA) from China, including advancing bilateral defense cooperation in the form of technology exchange, communication exchange, and military personnel exchange.
“We talked of the strategies to strengthen constructive defense relations during the meeting,” he said.
The exchange of military personnel between Indonesia and China, for example, is an important indicator to strengthen the defense in both countries. “Not only high-ranking military personnel, but middle- and low-ranking ones too,” said Frega.
The ministry also plans joint military exercises to boost the national defense sector. The joint exercise, he said, is part of defense diplomacy with numerous countries, including China.
According to Frega, the China visit reflects the good relations between President Prabowo and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. The meeting also strengthened economic relations between the two nations. "Because to date, President Prabowo has established good relations with President Xi Jinping, both in regards to economic relations as well as foreign politics,” Frega said.
