TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian badminton team dominated the Astana International Challenge 2025, which took place from December 17–21 at the Beeline Arena in Astana, Kazakhstan. Out of five events, the Red and White squads successfully secured four gold medals.
Indonesia's dominance affirms its position as a major global badminton powerhouse and demonstrates the effectiveness of its national athlete development program on the international stage. As part of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Continental Circuit, this tournament draws promising athletes from various countries to compete for world ranking points.
Indonesia won the mixed doubles with Bimo Prasetyo and Arlya Nabila Thesya Munggaran, who performed consistently and dominantly throughout the tournament. Indonesia also had brilliant results in the men's doubles, where Muhammad Rian Ardianto and Rahmat Hidayat won. Additionally, two other Indonesian pairs, Ali Faathir Rayhan and Devin Artha Wahyudi, as well as Anselmus Breagit Fredy Prasetya and Pulung Ramadhan, achieved third place. These results reflect the depth and strength of Indonesia's talent in this event.
In the women's doubles, Indonesia secured second place with the pair of Lanny Tria Mayasari and Amallia Cahaya Pratiwi. They demonstrated high competitiveness when facing international opponents. Indonesia also maintained its dominance in the women’s singles. Thalita Ramadhani Wiryawan won first place, and Dalila Aghnia Puteri finished third. Muhamad Yusuf won first place in the men's singles event, and Prahdiska Bagas Shujiwo took second. These achievements made Indonesia the overall champion of the tournament, earning them four gold medals and two silver medals.
Indonesian Ambassador to Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, Dr. M. Fadjroel Rachman, expressed gratitude to the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) delegation for coming to Kazakhstan. He also thanked Minister of Youth and Sports Erik Tohir, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports and Deputy Chair of PBSI Taufik Hidayat, and Chair of PBSI Fadil Imran for their full support in advancing sports diplomacy in Kazakhstan, the richest country in Central Asia and Eurasia.
"I am immensely grateful to the 28 athletes, coaches, and badminton officials who participated in the Astana International Challenge 2025 in Kazakhstan. These four gold and two silver medals are proof of our relentless efforts to defend the red and white flag, no matter the conditions," said Dr. Rachman.
“We hope Indonesia can continue to participate in the badminton championship in Kazakhstan," said Ambassador Fadjroel, who was the spokesperson for President Joko Widodo from 2019 to 2021.
Ambassador Fadjroel added, "The Indonesian Ministry of Youth and Sports will also soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding on Sports and Youth Cooperation with the Kazakhstan Ministry of Sports and Tourism."
PBSI team manager Hasanudin Purnama stated that consistent training and the Indonesian Embassy's full support were the keys to this victory. “They also took the time to be present and support the athletes directly on the field while they were competing. We would like to express our gratitude to all the staff at the Indonesian Embassy in Kazakhstan, especially Dr. M. Fadjroel Rachman, for his assistance with the badminton team during our stay in Kazakhstan," said Hasanudin.
Muhammad Rian Ardianto, the gold medalist in the men's doubles, said that he and Rahmat Hidayat dedicated their victory to the PBSI and the Indonesian people in Kazakhstan. "We dedicate this victory to the PBSI family, our supporters in Kazakhstan, and the Indonesian people. The challenge of the cold weather is one that many young Indonesian players are also facing," said the athlete, who once ranked number one in the world with Fajar Alfian.
