TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Search and rescue teams in Central Java, Indonesia, are set to conclude their operation today, Tuesday, November 25, 2025, as they continue searching for 16 people still missing after a major landslide in Pandanarum Village, Banjarnegara.

In this final push, rescuers will focus on the lowest part of the disaster zone, known as the “tongue” of the landslide.

Abdul Muhari, spokesperson for Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), said this final search area, identified as Sector C, remains the last significant section yet to be examined. Hundreds of personnel and 25 heavy machinery units are being deployed until the operation officially ends.

Searches in Sectors A and B have already been completed, resulting in the recovery of several victims.

“All hopes now rest on Sector C, which will be the determining point after ten days of continuous rescue efforts,” Abdul said in a statement on Tuesday morning.

The conditions at the site remain extremely challenging. According to Abdul, the terrain is unstable and saturated with water, with landslide debris more than 10 meters deep. The thick mud and high moisture levels continue to strain the stamina of rescue workers.

To support the final phase of the operation, teams have constructed drainage channels to lower water levels, while weather modification efforts are being carried out to disperse rain clouds and reduce the risk of additional rainfall.

“These measures are essential for ensuring a safe and effective search today,” Abdul added.

The landslide hit Pandanarum Village on Sunday, November 16, 2025, with 27 people initially reported missing. Around 800 residents have been evacuated, with the main shelter set up at the Pandanarum Sub-district office yard.

The disaster caused severe damage to 54 homes and lighter damage to 128 others. It also destroyed village infrastructure, including an 800-meter road segment, electrical lines, a 670-meter irrigation channel, one dam, and other piped irrigation systems.
