TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government is exploring the possibility of returning Reynhard Sinaga, who is convicted of sexual assault and currently imprisoned in the UK, to Indonesia. This effort was confirmed by Ahmad Usmarwi Kaffah, Special Staff for International Relations of the Coordinating Ministry for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections, following the handover of death row inmate Serge Atlaoui to French authorities.
“We are trying our best to return the person,” Ahmad told media at Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Tangerang, Banten, on Tuesday, February 4, 2025. He indicated that his ministry would soon begin negotiations with the British Embassy.
According to Ahmad, Reynhard Sinaga's parents have expressed their desire for their son's return to Indonesia. “Because until now they have not heard from their son, they cannot communicate. The prison in England is very closed,” he stated.
Ahmad noted that the process of returning Reynhard to Indonesia would differ from previous repatriations involving Australia, the Philippines, and France, as this case would involve a prisoner exchange rather than a prisoner transfer.
Reynhard Sinaga was convicted in January 2020 of 159 sexual assaults against 48 men. His crimes involved drugging his victims. He is currently serving a life sentence with a minimum term of 40 years.
While in prison, Reynhard Sinaga was reportedly the victim of an assault, believed to be a premeditated attack by fellow inmates.
