TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Investment and Downstream/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), Rosan Roeslani, expressed hope that Apple Inc.'s factory in Batam will commence operation in 2026. This factory is part of the US$1 billion or approximately Rp16.14 trillion investment plan announced by the American technology giant.

Rosan stated that Apple intends to construct the factory in the near future, although a specific construction timeline has not yet been disclosed. “It is anticipated that the factory will be completed by early 2026,” the Minister confirmed at the Investment Ministry Office in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.

The Batam factory is slated to specialize in the production of AirTags, Apple's tracking devices designed to assist users in locating lost items. Rosan hoped that this new facility could create job opportunities in Indonesia.

Rosan mentioned that Apple's initial investment of Rp16.14 trillion represents merely the first phase of a broader commitment. “This is the initial phase as we have engaged in discussions to attract other vendors as well,” he explained.

Minister Rosan conveyed this information following a meeting with Apple officials at the Investment Ministry Office. “Alhamdulillah, we concluded the meeting with a handshake and a photograph,” he remarked.

Apple had initially planned to invest US$100 million or approximately Rp1.61 trillion in Indonesia. This initial investment was intended to fulfill the Domestic Component Level (TKDN) requirements mandated by the Indonesian government to enable the distribution of the iPhone 16 within the domestic market. However, the government subsequently encouraged Apple to increase its investment commitment to the current US$1 billion or equivalent to Rp16.14 trillion.
