TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently investigating the arrest of six Indonesian nationals who are suspected of illegally entering the territory of Singapore via a sea route.

The Directorate of the Protection of Indonesian Citizens (PWNI) at the Ministry confirmed in Jakarta on Monday, December 22, as quoted by Antara, that the arrest was carried out by the Singapore Coast Guard on Sunday, December 21.

The ministry also said it was coordinating with the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore (KBRI Singapore) and the Singapore Police Force regarding the arrest of six Indonesian nationals suspected of illegally entering Singapore by sea.

PWNI explained that the arrest occurred when the Singapore Coast Guard detected a wooden boat in the waters around Tanah Merah early on Sunday morning. Six men, aged between 23 and 29 years, were detained.

In response to the incident, KBRI Singapore continues to coordinate with local authorities to confirm the identities of the six nationals and determine the necessary protection measures.

"Indonesian Embassy in Singapore continues to seek confirmation from local authorities to obtain official information regarding the identities, legal status, and the process of handling the Indonesian nationals, including charges and legal follow-ups in accordance with the applicable provisions in Singapore," PWNI said.

Prior to this, local media in Singapore reported the arrest of six Indonesian men for illegally entering Singapore on December 21.

According to CNA News, the arrest was made after the Singapore Coast Guard detected a wooden boat carrying six men off the coast of Tanah Merah, within Singapore's territorial waters, at around 12:35 AM.

The men, aged between 23 and 29 years, were intercepted and detained for entering Singapore without permission. Preliminary investigations by the Singapore police indicated that the six Indonesian nationals intended to enter Singapore illegally in search of employment.

The men were apprehended by the Coast Guard and are scheduled to face charges in court for illegal entry on Monday, December 22, 2025, according to the latest information from the Singapore police.

If found guilty, they could face a maximum prison sentence of six months and a minimum of three strokes of the cane.
