TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Directorate General of Immigration has commenced the gradual implementation of electronic passports or e-passports nationwide, beginning December 1, 2024. This shift aims to enhance security and streamline travel procedures for Indonesian citizens.
“Starting December 1, 2024, all Indonesian citizens applying for passports at 13 designated immigration offices will automatically receive an electronic passport. We plan to expand this initiative to all immigration offices across Indonesia gradually,” said Saffar M. Godam, Acting Director General of Immigration.
Unlike regular passports, Godam explained, e-passports incorporate advanced security features, including an embedded electronic chip containing biometric data such as facial photos and fingerprints. This data is encrypted with high-security technology, making it extremely difficult to counterfeit.
“Furthermore, e-passports also have enhanced security features such as special inks and holograms that are difficult to replicate,” Godam added.
These enhanced security measures not only minimize the risk of passport fraud but also facilitate smoother and more efficient border crossings, particularly in countries equipped with automated passport control systems that utilize chip readers.
Godam mentioned that numerous countries worldwide have adopted e-passports as valid travel documents. The full implementation of e-passport issuance is an immigration effort to strengthen the Indonesian passport.
“The use of a combination of advanced security features, high-quality materials, and the latest technology in accordance with international standards is paramount to ensuring that passports are protected during cross-border crossings,” Godam said.
The designated 13 immigration offices are as follows:
1. Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta Immigration Office
2. South Jakarta Immigration Office
3. West Jakarta Immigration Office
4. Medan Immigration Office
5. Batam Immigration Office
6. Makassar Immigration Office
7. Tangerang Immigration Office
8. Surabaya Immigration Office
9. Bali's Ngurah Rai Immigration Office
10. East Jakarta Immigration Office
11. Central Jakarta Immigration Office
12. North Jakarta Immigration Office
13. Tanjung Priok Immigration Office
