TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) is looking into alleged student bullying behind the Jakarta high school explosion. KPAI Commissioner Diyah Puspitarini said the impacts of bullying against Generation Alpha children differ from those of Generation Z.

The difference in character between the youth generations results in different forms and responses to social pressure. Several recent cases have shown a shift in this pattern. "This is in line with the incidents in Grobogan and West Lampung Coast. Victims of bullying killed their friends, their bullies," she said when contacted by Tempo on Friday, November 7, 2025.

Diyah explained in her presentation titled 'Dampak Bullying' or 'Impacts of Bullying' that Generation Z tends to experience psychological pressure, suicide, physical injuries, temporary disabilities, as well as antisocial behavior and insecurity.

Meanwhile, Generation Alpha is more prone to retaliation, virtually assassinating characters, insecurity, self-harm, and experiencing mental health disorders and deviant behavior.

According to her, Indonesian high school students mostly comprise late Gen Z teens.

The explosion occurred at Jakarta Public High School (SMAN) 72 on Friday, November 7, 2025, around 12:15 p.m. Two initial explosions were heard in the hall during the Friday prayer sermon, and the second at the school's back door. As a result of the incident, 54 students suffered injuries.

Several eyewitnesses said that a twelfth-grade student was found lying with a toy weapon nearby. The police found a modified can with a fuse and a small remote at the location.

The student was wearing boots, black pants, and a sleeveless white shirt with the words "Natural Selection" written on it. Photos widely circulating online showed several inscriptions on the toy weapon near the student, including "Welcome to Hell," "For Agartha." Also written are the names of mosque shooters overseas, such as Brenton Tarrant, Alexandre Bissonnette, and Luca Traini.

Several witnesses said the student was quiet and often bullied by other kids. According to one witness, ZA, the student often drew weapons and enjoyed watching violent videos.

Another student, I, confirmed that the student was quiet and often harassed. However, I admitted to not knowing the student personally.

The Jakarta Metro Police are still working to sterilize the explosion site at SMAN 72, Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, on Friday. The Head of Public Relations Division of the Jakarta Metro Police, Grand Commissioner Budi Hermanto, said that the crime scene security and sterilization were carried out by the bomb disposal team from Gegana.

KPAI said the agency will continue to monitor the handling of the child victims and ensure that the process complies with the principles of child protection.
