TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, said that the government seeks gas and oil imports from the U.S. once it lowers the reciprocal tariffs imposed on Indonesia.
The government will execute gas and oil imports only if negotiations between the two countries result in tariff reduction.
The government has allotted around US$10 to 15 billion to purchase gas and oil from the U.S., but only if the tariff is lowered. "If not, that means no deal," said Bahlil in the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday, July 14, 2025.
The Indonesian government is currently attempting negotiations with the U.S., pending the August 1 deadline for the imposition of a 32 percent import tariffs. Bahlil directs queries about tariff talks to the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs. "As the head of delegation," he said.
Bahlil said he does not yet know what the government's next step would be if the deal falls through. "We'll see," he added.
Previously, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 32 percent tariff on Indonesia, unchanged from the value announced earlier in April. “Starting August 1, 2025, we will charge Indonesia a tariff of only 32 percent on any and all Indonesian products sent into the United States, separate from all sectoral tariffs,” said Trump in a letter dated July 7, addressed to President Prabowo Subianto, as reported by Antara on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.
Trump said the tariff is intended to address the longstanding US trade deficit with Indonesia. “Please understand that the 32 percent figure is far less than what is needed to eliminate the trade deficit disparity we have with your country,” he wrote.
President Prabowo Subianto also plans to meet with Trump to directly negotiate the 32 percent import tariff.
