TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo has apologized to the public for shortcomings within the police force, acknowledging that the institution has not fully met public expectations and pledging continued reforms.
“We realize that the performance of the Indonesian National Police is far from perfect. On behalf of the police leadership and the entire force, we sincerely apologize to the Indonesian people,” Sigit said during a performance presentation at National Police Headquarters on Tuesday, December 30, 2025.
Sigit urged the public to continue offering criticism and feedback, which he described as essential to institutional improvement.
He said the police would listen more closely to public aspirations and make sustained efforts to improve their services. “We will continue to make improvements going forward,” he said.
During the presentation, Sigit outlined three key commitments. First, the police pledged to be more present within communities and more attentive to public concerns.
Second, the force committed to prioritizing a more humane and responsive approach in delivering public services to ensure they are easily accessible. Third, Sigit said the police would remain firm in dealing with criminals who harm the public and threaten national security.
At the same event, the Chief of Police’s Main Assistant for Operations, Commissioner General Fadil Imran, addressed several internal issues that have drawn public scrutiny. One key concern, he said, was the police’s reactive approach in handling certain situations, particularly during protests.
This, Fadil added, was closely linked to the second issue: the use of disproportionate force. He said the police had conducted evaluations following incidents involving excessive force during demonstrations.
The third issue, according to Fadil, was a crisis of public trust stemming from misconduct by some police officers. The fourth was the lack of effective de-escalation measures to reduce tensions during conflicts. “Concrete steps have been taken to address these four issues within the police force,” Fadil said.
