TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian national team defeated Myanmar 1-0 in the opening match of Group B of the 2024 AFF Cup. Asnawi Mangkualam scored the winning goal for the Garuda squad in the match held at Thuwunna Stadium, Yangon, on Monday, December 9, 2024.

Facing the host Myanmar, Indonesia national team coach Shin Tae-yong fielded Cahya Supriyadi as the goalkeeper. Muhammad Ferrari, Kadek Arel, and Dony Tri Pamungkas were designated as defenders.

In midfield, Shin Tae-yong fielded Alfriyanto Nico and Pratama Arhan on the wings. These two players flanked Zanadin Faris and Arkhan Fikri in the central midfielder positions. In the front line, Shin Tae-yong placed Marselino Ferdinan. The Oxford United player worked alongside Hokky Caraka and Arkhan Kaka Purwanto to score goals.

First Half

Indonesia's national team tried to take the initiative to attack from the get-go, countered by Myanmar, who also played aggressively since the beginning, making it difficult for the young Garuda players to execute clear chances.

Indonesia was almost caught off guard. In the third minute, a mistake by Dony Tri in clearing the ball gave Lwin Moe Aung shooting space. Fortunately, his shot went wide to the left of the post.

In the 13th minute, Indonesia got a chance after Marselino made a run on the right side of Myanmar's defense. Unfortunately, his header was easily caught by goalkeeper Zin Nyi Nyi Aung.

In the 17th minute, Indonesia's goalpost was threatened by Thiha Zaw, who took a shot from inside the penalty box, and three minutes later by Aung Kaung Mann. Both shots were blocked by Cahya.

Indonesia tried to break free from the pressure, but the final passes were often inaccurate, and the attacks were halted in Myanmar's defensive third. Several opportunities from set pieces also went in vain. One of them, in the 32nd minute, Ferrari's header from Dony Tri's corner kick missed the target. The first half ended in a 0-0 draw.

Second Half

Shin Tae-yong made significant changes at the start of the second half. Asnawi Mangkualam, Victor Dethan and Rafael Struick came in. Nico Alfriyanto, Zanadin Fariz, and Arkhan Kaka went out.

The changes did not immediately have an impact.

In the first 15 minutes, there were not many dangerous chances, even though Indonesia's ball circulation was smoother. Statistics showed that Myanmar had 40 percent ball possession compared to Indonesia's 60 percent. The match proceeded at a slow pace. Only two missed opportunities from Indonesia during that period.

In the 65th minute, Hokky Caraka had a chance with a shot from outside the penalty box. However, his powerful shot was blocked by Myanmar's defense line.

In the 76th minute, Asnawi Mangkualam scored the breakthrough goal. Starting from a throw-in by Pratama Arhan, Asnawi utilized a back pass from Kadek Arel. His shot was not perfectly anticipated by goalkeeper Zin Nyi Nyi Aung, resulting in a 1-0 score in favor of the Garuda team.

Asnawi's goal made the game proceed at a faster pace. In the 79th minute, Rafafel Struick had a chance after utilizing a pass from Marselino, but was blocked by Myanmar’s goalkeeper.

Shin Tae-yong brought in Ronaldo Kwateh to replace Marselino. Some of his movements caused Myanmar's defense line to open up several times. One of them resulted in a chance for Ferrari, who took a strong long-range shot. His shot missed. Until the seven minutes of injury time, the score remained 1-0. Indonesia secured their first victory in the 2024 AFF Cup.
