TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Agriculture Amran Sulaiman is seeking the opening of 100,000 hectares of sugarcane plantations next year, which requires up to Rp1.6 trillion in budget.
"A total of 100,000 hectares throughout Indonesia. Seventy percent here, in East Java," Amran said in a written statement on Tuesday, December 23, 2025.
Amran stated that the majority of sugarcane plantations will be located in East Java, while the rest will be spread across other regions such as Lampung, South Sulawesi, North Sumatra, and Central Java.
According to the minister, the opening of new sugarcane plantations will involve the Indonesian armed forces (TNI), police, and the attorney general's office.
The sugarcane expansion will be carried out this year, and is targeted for completion in 2026. "We will start again in January through March," he said.
Indonesia will forgo white sugar imports if the sugarcane project in East Java succeeds, said Amran.
The Ministry of Agriculture projects that consumption sugar stock will reach 1.437 million tons by year-end, which will suffice for the first half of 2026.
As for the annual sugar consumption in 2026, it is estimated to reach 2.836 million tons, which could be met through the remaining 2025 stock of 1.437 million tons and the additional production of 1.399 million tons.
Meanwhile, Amran mentioned that the import of raw crystal sugar in early 2025 was carried out to anticipate the risk of fluctuating sugar prices, especially before Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr.
The import of raw sugar, according to Amran, was also necessary to strengthen the government's food reserve stock (CPP) managed by state-owned enterprises (BUMN).
According to Amran, raw sugar import that is equivalent to 190,000 tons of white crystal sugar this year by ID FOOD has no negative impact on domestic farmers. "This is because the procurement is not carried out during the peak harvest season," he said.
