TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Forestry Ministry has released 83 Sumatran Orangutans and 414 Bornean Orangutans back into their natural habitats between 2020 and 2024. These orangutans were rescued from various threats, including hunting, illegal wildlife trade, human-wildlife conflict, and illegal captivity.
Nunu Anugrah, Director of Species and Genetic Biodiversity Conservation at the Ministry of Forestry explained that after being rescued, these orangutans undergo rehabilitation at specialized centers. “Once deemed healthy, they are released [back into the wild]. There is also a translocation to a place far away from the conflict area,” he told Tempo on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.
Nunu ensured that the released orangutans were still being monitored, at least for several months, until they could adapt and survive in their new habitat. The exact duration of monitoring depends on the ability of each orangutan.
“One key indicator [of successful reintroduction] is the ability of the orangutan to build its own nest,” he added.
Orangutans rescued from illegal trade or captivity require intensive rehabilitation and habituation programs. Young orangutans undergo specialized training, often referred to as "jungle school" or "forest school", where they learn essential survival skills such as foraging for food, building nests, and developing social interactions with other orangutans.
Recently on January 11, 2025, the East Kalimantan Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) released four Bornean Orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) into the Gunung Batu Mesangat Protected Forest in East Kutai Regency, East Kalimantan. These orangutans had been illegally kept by local communities before being rescued and rehabilitated by the Bornean Orangutan Rescue Alliance (BORA).
In October 2024, the West Kalimantan BKSDA successfully reintroduced seven rehabilitated orangutans to their natural habitat within the Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park.
