TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian National Army (TNI) Commander General Agus Subiyanto announced that the planned peacekeeping mission to Gaza, Palestine, will be commanded by a Lieutenant General (three-star general). The TNI is currently in the process of selecting the 20,000 personnel required for the deployment.
"The peacekeeping force contingent is currently in the selection phase. The plan is for it to be led by a three-star general," Commander Agus Subiyanto confirmed at the DPR complex in Jakarta on Monday, November 24, 2025.
General Agus detailed that the force will consist of 20,000 troops organized into three composite brigades, which are combinations of several battalions. Each composite brigade will include specialized units: a health battalion, a construction battalion, a support battalion, and a mechanical support battalion.
Agus noted that the selection process includes rigorous physical and psychological health tests. "The first step in recruiting soldiers is health examinations. They must have good health and physical and psychological fitness," he said.
Following the initial selection, the TNI will dispatch special personnel to assess the conditions on the ground in Gaza. The deployment of the 20,000 troops will commence only after this critical assessment is complete.
In addition to preparing the personnel, the TNI is planning support through the procurement of main weapon systems (Alutsista). The force will be equipped with helicopters and C-130 Hercules aircraft. The peacekeeping force will also include two hospital ships from the Navy.
Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin clarified that while the deployment of the 20,000 troops is a mandate from President Prabowo Subianto, the soldiers will operate under the command of the United Nations.
"So we will be carrying out the mandate of the United Nations. And substantively, these troops are being prepared by the Indonesian National Army Commander," said Sjafrie.
The Minister added that the troops' specific assignments will focus on humanitarian needs and the rehabilitation of damaged buildings in Gaza. The personnel selected are experienced in conducting military operations other than war (OMSP), both domestically and internationally.
President Prabowo Subianto first expressed Indonesia's willingness to deploy 20,000 personnel to secure peace in the Gaza region during his address at the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, USA, on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
