TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Israeli strike in Gaza hit a school in a refugee camp in Shati, Gaza City, on Saturday, November 16, 2024, and killed at least 10 people. The medical team said the school was used as a shelter for refugees during the Gaza war.
The UN-run Abu Assi school, where rescue operations are ongoing, may still have people trapped under the rubble, health officials said. As of the release of this news, the rescue operation is still ongoing to save any individuals who may still be trapped in the rubble. Tel Aviv has not commented on this attack.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military on Saturday, November 16, 2024, reported that two rockets were fired into Israel from northern Gaza, but were intercepted. The rocket launches at least showed Hamas' ability to fire rockets into Israeli territory despite 13 months of raging Gaza war and increasingly fierce battles that quickly turned the Gaza area into a mountain of garbage, with most of its 2.3 million residents losing their homes.
The Palestinian Health Authorities said at least 30 people were killed in Israeli attacks across Gaza on Saturday, November 16, 2024. The Gaza Health Ministry said 43,799 people have been confirmed dead since the October 7, 2023 attack.
Gaza Deputy Head and Hamas Chief Negotiator, Khalil Al-Hayya, previously stated that Israel is still blocking a ceasefire agreement despite Hamas being flexible. Hayya said that although Hamas is flexible towards a ceasefire agreement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government continue to procrastinate and disrupt negotiations.
Israel and Hamas blame each other for the failure to reach an agreement so far, each accusing the other of making impossible demands.
Hayya said Hamas is not ready to make concessions to end the war, withdraw its forces from Gaza, return internally displaced people to their homes, and make a hostage exchange deal. Netanyahu has vowed that the war will only end after Hamas is eradicated.
