TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta’s Acting Governor Teguh Setyabudi assures that food stocks are safe ahead of Ramadan and the 2025 Eid al-Fitr, despite reports of a surge in prices.
“The demand for food items like the curly red chili may rise by 7.53 percent and 17.38 percent for beef. But we ensure that Jakarta’s food stocks remain sufficient,” he said in a statement on Wednesday, February 19, adding that prices remain stable with reasonable fluctuation.
Teguh maintained that internal supply held by the regionally owned company (BUMD) PT Food Station Tjipinang Jaya would suffice for the next 3.5 months, while reserves in Bulog warehouses will cover 6.5 months of public demand.
As food security is guaranteed, Teguh urged people to avoid panic buying and for sellers to not hoard food items, as it will influence food price hikes.
Teguh mentioned that the Jakarta Provincial Government will regularly monitor the availability and prices of food through regional officers, Jakarta food BUMDs, and the Food Task Force. They are aiming to maintain the availability and stability of food prices ahead of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr 2025.
"Don’t panic, the local governments will ensure the food stock, and Jakarta specifically, is sufficient,” he said.
Teguh explained that the Jakarta government will take several measures to anticipate food shortages and price hikes, including the mobile cheap food distribution at 163 strategic locations. The activity will run for 21 days in February.
The government will also distribute food aid for eligible residents, ensuring the freshness of food sold in Jakarta markets, and filling the food stock at BUMD warehouses.
Jakarta’s government also works with other regions to meet food demand and work in synergy with the central government and the Jakarta Inflation Control Team (TPID) in controlling inflation rates.
