TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta’s Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has urged residents to remain vigilant against potential flooding on New Year’s Eve, as heavy rainfall is forecast to affect the capital throughout Wednesday, December 31, 2025.
BPBD Jakarta Executive Head Isnawa Adji said communities living along riverbanks should be particularly alert to rising water levels.
“Residents in areas near rivers need to exercise caution,” Isnawa said on Wednesday.
He identified several rivers at risk of overflowing, including the Ciliwung, Pesanggrahan, Angke, Krukut, Rajawati, and Kali Mampang. Neighborhoods considered vulnerable include Pengadegan, Pejaten, Kebon Baru, Kuningan Barat, Cililitan, Jatinegara, Kembangan Utara, and Rawa Buaya.
Low-lying areas such as Cipulir are also susceptible to flooding, especially locations with limited drainage capacity and a lack of green open spaces, Isnawa added.
In northern Jakarta, authorities are also monitoring the risk of tidal flooding, particularly in coastal areas such as Penjaringan, Kamal Muara, and Ancol. The BPBD said it is continuously tracking rainfall intensity and river conditions to anticipate potential disasters.
During the New Year’s Eve period, the agency will place 267 disaster response personnel on standby. Emergency services through the national 112 hotline will be fully operational, supported by round-the-clock monitoring at the BPBD command center.
Earlier on Wednesday, the BPBD recorded tidal flooding along a section of Jalan R.E. Martadinata in Papanggo, Tanjung Priok, where seawater inundated the road to a depth of about 15 centimeters.
The agency has also issued a warning for potential coastal flooding from December 30, 2025, through January 7, 2026.
According to BPBD, the risk is heightened by a combination of peak sea levels, a full moon, and the Perigee phenomenon, when the Moon is closest to the Earth, increasing tidal heights.
“The Jakarta BPBD urges the public to remain alert and prepared for possible flooding,” Isnawa said.
He added that personnel have been deployed to monitor flood-prone areas and are coordinating with the city’s Water Resources Agency, Public Works Department, and Fire and Rescue Agency to operate water pumps and ensure drainage systems function properly.
