KPK Elected Chief Setyo Budiyanto Says OTT to Continue

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The elected chief of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Setyo Budiyanto, has stated that he will continue to uphold the sting operation (OTT) as one of the strategies to eradicate corruption in the country. This commitment was expressed earlier when he underwent a health test at the Legal Commission of the House of Representatives. "OTT continues," Setyo said at the Parliament Complex in Jakarta on Thursday, December 5, 2024.

Setyo explained that the recent debate on the KPK's OTT was more about the issue of terminology. KPK Deputy Chairman Johanis Tanak, who was re-elected, previously stated that he would eliminate sting operations if the Legal Commission of the Indonesian House of Representatives elected him to lead the KPK. "Actually, this is just a discussion on the issue of naming and nomenclature," he said.

The explanation of the content of OTT as a form of investigation to catch perpetrators of corruption, according to Setyo, was conveyed by KPK Deputy Chairman Alexander Marwata. "It was conveyed by Mr. Alexander Marwata, he stated that naming," he said.

Setyo, who previously served as director of investigations at the KPK, believes that the elected leaders of the anti-corruption commission for the period 2024-2029 will agree to maintain the sting operation. Because, he said, OTT can be an effective strategy used by the KPK to uncover major corruption cases. "The activity is an entry point to uncover bigger cases," he said.

However, he mentioned that he will further formulate the mechanism of implementing OTT together with the other four collectively selected collegial leaders of the KPK for the period 2024-2029. "The five of us will discuss it more selectively, in more detail, how to make it better, which may reveal larger cases," he said.

Earlier, the plenary session of the House of Representatives of Indonesia approved the candidates for the KPK Chairperson and Supervisory Board for the 2024-2029 term based on the fit and proper tests conducted by the House Commission III.

The names of the candidates for the heads of the KPK for 2024-2029 who passed the fit and proper tests and were elected are Setyo Budiyanto as Chairman, followed by Deputy Chairmen, namely Johanis Tanak, Fitroh Rohcahyanto, Agus Joko Pramono, and Ibnu Basuki Widodo.

Meanwhile, the candidates for the KPK Supervisory Board for 2024-2029 who passed and were elected from the eligibility tests are Benny Jozua Mamoto, Chisca Mirawati, Wisnu Baroto, Gusrizal, and Sumpeno.
