TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As the requisite lowest rate employer needs to pay the workers per given period, minimum wage is designed to sustain a secured and inclusive workforce environment. However, the heavy emphasis on equitable share doesn’t always translate to fairness.
In the United States (U.S.), the federal minimum wage stays at $7.25 for more than a decade, despite seeing a wave of inflation. Because it’s deemed insufficient, multiple cities have the highest minimum wage in the U.S. to facilitate their precarious cost of living.
5 Highest Minimum Wages in U.S. Cities
According to Investopedia, Tukwila and Seattle occupy the highest rank of highest minimum wage in the United States. Read on to discover other cities.
1. Tukwila
The minimum wage in Tukwila as of January 2024 was at $20.29 per hour for large employers with over 500 employees worldwide. In the slightly lower division, mid-sized employers of 15 to 500 employees worldwide have to pay their workers $18.29 per hour.
Although there has been circulating news about the rise of minimum wage for mid-sized companies to $19.29 per hour in Tukwila by July 2024, there are currently very limited updates available on the issues.
2. Seattle
Seattle is the city where the minimum wage is constantly adjusted in accordance with annual inflation, per Investopedia. For a decade, Seattle has been seen to exceed the federal government’s minimum wage. Owing to the city’s council, Seattle was the first one to administer a $15 minimum wage in the United States.
In 2023, employers of both small and large companies implement a minimum wage of $18.69 per hour. As of January 2024, it had another raise to $19.97 per hour, with the exemption of a lower rate of $17.25 for small businesses paying $2.72 per hour towards the workers’ medical benefits.
3. SeaTac
As a part of the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries, workers in SeaTac have the minimum wage of $16.28 per hour. However, employees who are involved in the city’s transportation and hospitality industries are paid a slightly higher rate at $19.71 as of January 2024. Much like Seattle, the minimum wage in SeaTac is tailored annually to accommodate ongoing inflation.
4. Mountain View
Since January 2015, the minimum wage of Mountain View was established at $10.30, set to be higher than the federal compliance. For the following years until 2018, when the minimum wage reached $15, the regulation was refined each year by a specific amount. Later in 2019, the city’s minimum wage has been continuously altered to the inflation annually, with the latest one in January 2024, Mountain Views’ employees were required to pay $18.75 per hour.
5. Emeryville
Rounding up the list of cities with the highest minimum wage in the United States, Emeryville put a policy of $18.67 in place in July 2023. While the city enforces adjusted minimum wage for annual inflation, Emeryville originally had two minimum wage tiers in 2015. For employees of age above 55 years, the pay was $14.44, and the rest younger than 55 years were paid $12.25 per hour.
