TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government is currently making various efforts to show a firm commitment in eradicating online gambling. One of them is by blocking thousands of bank and digital wallet accounts that are suspected to be involved in online gambling. So, which banks and digital wallets are the most widely used for this illegal activity?
During a press conference held at the office of the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) on Thursday, November 21, 2024, Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, revealed that in November 2024, the Online Gambling Eradication Desk had submitted 651 requests to block bank accounts related to online gambling.
She also presented data on online gambling accounts that were submitted to banks to be blocked during the period from August 8, 2023, to November 19, 2024. Based on the data she provided, it is known that during this period, online gambling accounts submitted for blockage to various banks include:
- BCA Bank with 517 accounts,
- BRI Bank with 126 accounts,
- Mandiri Bank with 75 accounts,
- BNI Bank with 58 accounts,
- CIMB Niaga Bank with 24 accounts,
- BSI Bank with 12 accounts,
- Danamon Bank with 3 accounts, and
- Sinarmas Bank, Permata Bank, Maybank, SeaBank, Paninbank, and Mega Bank, each with 1 account.
"We monitor that the most widely used banks are BCA Bank, BRI Bank, BNI Bank, Mandiri Bank, Niaga Bank, BSI Bank, Danamon Bank, and others," said Meutya while adding that solid cooperation with the banking sector is expected to narrow the space for online gambling activities.
At the same event, Meutya also mentioned that more than 104,000 online gambling sites had been successfully blocked within 16 working days. The data is counted since the desk under the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs or Menko Polkam started its first meeting on November 4, 2024.
"The online gambling desk under the leadership of Menko Polkam had its first meeting on November 4, and we see that by November 19, 104,819 sites have been closed. This is calculated from November 4," said Meutya on Thursday, November 21, 2024.
She also added that more than 380,000 online gambling sites have been shut down during the new government under the leadership of President Prabowo Subianto, which started from Sunday, October 20.
