TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 originating from the waters south of West Java on Wednesday morning, November 13, 2024. The Director of Earthquake and Tsunami BMKG, Daryono, stated that the earthquake detected at 08:41 AM local time came from a depth of 90 kilometers in the Indian Ocean, precisely from a point about 137 kilometers southwest of Pangandaran District.

"It is a type of medium earthquake due to rock deformation within the Indo-Australia plate (intra-slab)," he said in a written statement, post-incident.

According to Daryono, the earthquake had an oblique thrust mechanism. Referring to the BMKG shaking map, the tremor was felt in the areas of Garut, Cianjur, Ciwidey, Tasikmalaya, and Pangandaran.

The shaking scale was III MMI, meaning it was felt inside the house as if a truck was passing by. This earthquake was also felt by the residents in Bandung, West Bandung, and Cimahi with an intensity scale of II MMI, or causing hanging lightweight objects to sway. "Modeling results indicate that this earthquake does not have the potential for a tsunami," said Daryono.

The BMKG team also did not record any aftershocks until 09:10 AM local time. As in previous advisories, Daryono advised the public to avoid buildings with cracks or damage, and ensure that their residences are earthquake-resistant.
