TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Several parts of North Sumatra have been hit by floods and landslides after continuous downpours since last Saturday through late Tuesday, November 25, 2025. The heavy rainfall has caused rivers in Central Tapanuli (Tapteng) and South Tapanuli (Tapsel) to overflow, leading to flash floods. In the Tukka District, Tapteng, hundreds of residents affected by flash floods have been forced to evacuate.

The head of the North Sumatra Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Tuahta Ramajaya Saragih, stated that seven regencies and cities in North Sumatra were affected by floods and landslides.

"Thus far, BPBD has recorded that four residents of Mardame Village, Sitahuis District, Tapteng Regency, have died after being buried under landslide materials," said Tuahta on late Tuesday, November 25, 2025.

The deceased residents are Dewi Hutabarat, alongside her three children: Tio Arta Rouli Lumbantobing, Vania Aurora Lumbantobing, and Ilona Lumbantobing.

It is estimated that the landslide swept in during the early hours after heavy rainfall had poured over the region. "Based on the Tapteng BPBD report, the four victims were found buried in the landslide inside their house at around 07:00 a.m. local time," Tuahta said.

Flash floods also occurred in Huta Godang, Batangtoru, Tapsel regency, with no reports of casualties. Still in Tapsel, the connecting road between Tapsel and Mandailing Natal Regency in Rianite Village, Angkola Sangkunur, was cut off due to a landslide caused by the heavy rainfall since last Sunday.

In addition to Tapteng and Tapsel, floods and landslides also hit Mandailing Natal Regency; North Tapanuli (Taput); Nias, and the cities of Gunung Sitoli and Sibolga. In Taput, disaster struck Sitolubahal Village and Robean Village, Purbatua District. The Aek Mahassan River overflowed, submerging around 60 residential houses. Meanwhile, two landslide points in Robean Village affected two houses and caused one family to sustain injuries.

The Head of the Pahae Jae Sectoral Police, Taput, Assistant Commissioner Hitler Hutagalung, stated that affected residents have been temporarily relocated to nearby houses while awaiting further medical treatment at the Janjiangkola Community Health Center.

The Head of the Mandailing Natal BPBD, Mukhsin Nasution, mentioned that eight districts in the regency bordering West Sumatra were also affected by floods due to the rainfall since last Saturday. "In Panyabungan Selatan District, a landslide occurred. There have been no casualties," Mukhsin said.

Extreme weather also caused a disaster in South Nias. In Hilimegai District, the inter-district road was disrupted. One house suffered severe damage in Fanayama District, and the road access in Onolalu District was affected by a landslide. However, there were no casualties.

Meanwhile, in Gunungsitoli City, a 25-meter section of the road was covered by landslide material, and several houses suffered severe damage after landslide struck early Monday, at around 01:00 a.m.

In the city of Sibolga, floods ranging from 30 to 50 centimeters deep have inundated four districts; Sibolga Kota, Sibolga Sambas, South Sibolga, and North Sibolga. "There have been no reports of casualties from the affected regions. The only confirmed casualties are from Mardame Village, Sitahuis District, Tapteng Regency, based on the data received by the North Sumatra BPBD Operations Center," Tuahta stated.
