TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - At least five U.N. peacekeepers (UNIFIL) from Malaysia were injured in an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon on Thursday, November 7, 2024. Al Arabiya reported that the attack killed three civilians.
Israel has not responded to the attack in Sidon, Lebanon. The Israeli military launched a string of attacks after Hezbollah said it had launched missile attacks targeting a military base near Israel's main international airport on Wednesday.
The Hezbollah-Israel war broke out at the end of September when Israel Israel expanded its focus from fighting Hamas in the Gaza Strip to securing its northern border.
As mediation efforts keep stalling, the U.S. State Department said Secretary Antony Blinken will continue to work towards ending the wars in Gaza and Lebanon. The efforts are carried out before handing over the administration to Donald Trump in January.
In Gaza, the civil defense agency said 12 people were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a school on Thursday, where displaced Palestinians are sheltered. Witness Ibrahim al-Madhoun at the attack site in Gaza City said, “Women and children were torn apart by F-16 jets and missiles weighing a ton.”
The attack that wounded U.N. peacekeepers struck near a military checkpoint in Sidon, a major city in southern Lebanon.
The Lebanese army said Israel attacked a vehicle at a checkpoint, killing three civilians and injuring three soldiers and members of the Malaysian contingent from the U.N. peacekeeping forces, UNIFIL.
“Five peacekeepers were lightly injured,” UNIFIL said in a statement, urging all sides to avoid endangering peacekeepers or civilians.
The wounded soldiers had been serving at the checkpoint, while the UNIFIL personnel hit were in a vehicle of the U.N. peacekeeping force that was passing through the checkpoint at the time, according to the army statement.
Lebanon's foreign ministry accused Israel of repeatedly targeting UNIFIL troops, Lebanese military personnel, and civilians.
