TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - The Head of the Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights in Yogyakarta, Agung Rektono Seto, denied the news about the release and repatriation of Mary Jane Veloso, a Filipina drug convict, on Wednesday, November 20, 2024. "At this time, Mary Jane Veloso remains in Class IIB Women's Prison in Yogyakarta and in good health," said Agung on Wednesday, November 20.
Filipino President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr or Bongbong Marcos previously revealed the news about Veloso’s repatriation through his Instagram account on Wednesday. However, the Yogyakarta ministry office claimed to have not received any information about it from the relevant stakeholders.
He stated there has been no further notification regarding Mary Jane's release. "We will continue to coordinate with the central government and various stakeholders to monitor the developments," he said.
Mary Jane Veloso was previously sentenced to death in Indonesia for a drug smuggling case in 2010. Her case has garnered international attention, with many parties calling for her death sentence to be revoked. The Philippine government has also actively advocated for Mary Jane, stating that she is a victim of human trafficking.
However, Agung emphasized that there have been no new directives regarding her legal status. "We will heed the central government’s policies. Whatever decision is made, we will implement it in accordance with the applicable procedures," he said.
According to the latest report, Mary Jane Veloso is in good health and is carrying out her detention period at the Class IIB Women's Prison in Yogyakarta. The prison authorities also ensure that Mary Jane receives her rights as an inmate, including access to healthcare and rehabilitation.
"Mary Jane is in very good condition. Her rights as an inmate are fulfilled. She is even taught various skills, such as dancing and batik, by the prison officers," said Agung.
The Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights in Yogyakarta ensures that they will continue to communicate with the central government about Veloso’s case.
"We are ready to implement the directives from the central government," said Agung, referring to Mary Jane Veloso’s case.
