TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sources in the US and Mexican governments say the Mexican government has rejected a request from US President Donald Trump to allow US military planes carrying illegal immigrants to land in Mexico.

The US is unable to carry out plans to land a C-17 transport plane in Mexico because the country has not given permission. Sources in the US and Mexican Air Forces confirmed the decision, which was later reported by NBC News.

Two similar flights took place on Friday, January 24, 2025, flying from the US to Guatemala, each carrying about 80 migrants.

Mexico's Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday, January 24, 2025, that its country has good relations with the United States and is ready to work together to address a number of issues, such as immigration issues.

"When it comes to repatriation, we will always welcome the arrival of Mexican citizens to our territory with open arms," the Mexican Foreign Ministry said.

Mexico has not officially given a reason for refusing to grant permission for the two US fighter jets carrying immigrants to land in Mexico.

Earlier this week, the Trump administration announced it was relaunching a program called "Remain in Mexico," which forces non-Mexican asylum seekers to wait in Mexico until their cases in the United States are resolved. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Wednesday that the US move requires her country's consent to accept asylum seekers, and that agreement has not yet been reached between the two countries.

Earlier on Jan. 23, the Pentagon deployed more troops to the US-Mexico border to deal with a surge of people trying to cross into the country illegally. After taking office, Trump declared a national emergency at the border and vowed to stop the invasion of migrants entering the United States illegally.

"President Trump has signed an executive order to deploy 1,500 additional troops south of the US border. This comes just one day after he took office. He (Trump) directly directed the U.S. Department of Defense to make homeland security a core mission of the department," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Wednesday, January 22, 2025.

About 2,200 active-duty troops are already stationed at the border as part of Task Force-North, headquartered in El Paso, Texas. The troops operate alongside Customs and Border Protection agents.

According to CNN, the troops are currently helping with most of the logistical and bureaucratic tasks such as data entry and surveillance. Interim US Defense Secretary Robert Salesses said the Pentagon would deploy helicopters and crews as well as intelligence analysis to support detection and surveillance efforts.
