Minister Bahlil Breaks Down Prabowo's 100% Renewable Energy Plan

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia clarified President Prabowo Subianto’s recent statement about Indonesia’s goal to achieve 100 percent renewable energy within the next ten years.

The statement was delivered during Prabowo’s visit to Brazil last week. According to Bahlil, this target is expected to be met earlier than the original 2040 deadline.

Bahlil said that during the meeting with the President of Brazil, the Indonesian government laid out its plan to add around 100 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2040. He added that from 2025 to 2034, approximately 70 gigawatts are expected to be installed.

He also explained that one of the immediate strategies involves installing solar panels in villages that currently lack access to electricity. Bahlil assured that these areas will soon be connected to the national electricity grid.

"We will follow the President’s directive to provide electricity access to these villages and connect it directly to homes. This is part of the Asta Cita program," Bahlil said during a press conference at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday, July 14, 2025.

President Prabowo had earlier voiced his confidence that Indonesia could reach full reliance on renewable energy within a decade. He believes the country is capable of achieving this goal ahead of the initial 2040 timeline.

He made this statement during a joint press briefing with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at the Planalto Palace in Brasília. "The target is, of course, 2040, but my experts said that we can achieve it much sooner," Prabowo said in the official transcript.

During the meeting, Prabowo reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Brazil in key sectors such as agriculture, clean energy, and defense. He said Brazil sets a strong example in developing biofuels and agricultural innovation, areas in which Indonesia hopes to gain further knowledge.

He added that Brazil has welcomed Indonesia’s plan to send more technical teams to study advancements in renewable energy and agricultural modernization.

"We continue to look to Brazil’s achievements in biofuel development. We are determined to pursue similar progress," Prabowo said.
