TEMPO.CO, Bandung - Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted on Friday afternoon, July 11, 2025, at 1:10 p.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB), or 2:10 p.m. local time, spewing a volcanic ash column estimated to reach 4 kilometers above its peak. The ash shot into the sky with thick intensity, drifting towards the west and northwest.
The eruption of the volcano, located in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, was recorded by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 47.3 mm and a duration of approximately 1 minute and 51 seconds.
"The eruption was accompanied by loud roars and moderate booms, which were heard at the observation post," said Emanuel Rofinus Bere, an officer at the Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Observation Post, in his written report.
Based on reports from the Geological Agency spanning July 10-11, 2025, no explosive eruption had occurred at Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki since 6:00 a.m. local time (Central Indonesian Time/WITA). However, a flickering of flames and avalanches were observed at its peak, though the distance and direction of the flow were not visually confirmed.
Muhammad Wafid, Head of the Geological Agency, explained that the flickering flames indicated the presence of incandescent material around the eruption hole. Meanwhile, the dense white smoke rising was predominantly water vapor due to the increased temperature in the crater area.
Over the past two days, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has recorded two avalanches, nine gusts of wind, 36 non-harmonic tremors, three low-frequency earthquakes, 21 shallow volcanic earthquakes, one local tectonic earthquake, and nine distant tectonic earthquakes.
"The types of recorded earthquakes indicate an increase in magma supply accompanied by gas or magma flow to the surface, avalanches, and volcanic gas release," Wafid said, adding that Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki's activity remains at Level IV, or Alert. "The potential for an explosive eruption is still highly possible."
Residents and tourists are advised to avoid any activities within a six-kilometer radius of the eruption center, and specifically within the southwest-northeast sector up to seven kilometers. People living in disaster-prone areas are also urged to remain vigilant about the potential for lava floods if heavy rain occurs, especially in river basin areas originating from Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, such as in Dulipali, Nobo, Hokeng Jaya, and Nurabelen.
