TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Mount Rinjani National Park Office will temporarily close the hiking trails of Mount Rinjani in Lombok starting January 1, 2026. This closure is a response to the risk of bad weather at the start of the year.

The Head of the Mount Rinjani National Park Office, Yarman, signed the official notice in a letter numbered PG.8/T.39/TU/KSA.04.01/B/12/2025. Yarman noted that the closure follows a Minister of Forestry circular regarding disaster mitigation for floods and landslides.

"All hiking destinations in the Mount Rinjani National Park are closed starting from January 1, 2026, until March 31, 2026," Yarman said in a statement in Mataram on Monday, December 22, 2025. The announcement was shared via the @btn_gn_rinjani Instagram account.

Six main hiking trails will remain shut until the end of March 2026. These include the Senaru, Torean, Sembalun, Timbanuh, Tetebatu, and Aik Berik trails. The decision relies on weather forecasts from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Mataram. Data shows the region is entering a rainy season transition for the 2025/2026 period.

BMKG also tracked Tropical Cyclone Genesis 93S. The agency warned of potential hydro-meteorological disasters like heavy rain and strong winds that can hit suddenly. These conditions increase the risk of floods, landslides, and tornadoes in the area.

According to the National Park's social media post, "This closure is done as a step to protect the safety of visitors, while also allowing Mount Rinjani to rest and recover amid the potential of extreme weather during the transition period to the rainy season." The move aims to balance visitor safety with environmental health.

The office also released new rules for tourist activities during this period. The last check-in time for hikers is December 31, 2025, and all visitors must check out by January 3, 2026. Meanwhile, the eRinjani ticket booking system will close on December 28, 2025, at 23:59 Central Indonesian Time (WITA).
